Hi Everyone

My name is Jemima but everyone calls me Mima. I was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia on 13th June 2007 and had to spend just over 3 weeks in hospital. I have set up this blog so that I can keep in touch with my friends and keep you up to date with what I am doing.

WE DID IT!!! - THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO HAVE SUPPORTED JEMIMA INVITES OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, WE HAVE NOW MANAGED TO BEGIN THE RESEARCH WHICH PROFESSOR MARTIN DYER WAS SO DESPERATE TO DO.

Guess where I am?????????????????????
Back in hospital!!!! but only for last night because I had some chemo yesterday and Dr Madi wanted to make sure that I didn't do that funny fainting thing again and guess what.............. I didn't so this morning I have to have some asparagus and mayonnaise injection into my leg and then I can go home.
I have been very busy since last week, I have been at Debbie's riding stables three times and helped with mucking out, giving the horses hay in the fields and leading other children around the school. It was fun but I would like to ride again now. It was Emily's birthday on Monday and she had a riding party so I lead her friends too. I am going for a day to Debbie's tomorrow and Mummy is going to stay with me whilst I learn some plaiting and oh hang on I have to go now because Rosie the nurse has come to give me my injection. Byeeeeee!!!!

I'm home - Wednesday 17th October

I came home yesterday afternoon after an x-ray on my heart. The doctors are still trying to find out what is going on so I have been to Glenfield today for an ultrasound test on my heart. He told me that I have a small hole in my heart so I am going back tomorrow to have some saline flushed through my line whilst the doctors look at my heart with the echo thingy and they will see if the flush goes through the hole into the other side of my heart. Mummy and Daddy and I went to meet a man this morning to talk about the EEG and MRI scan and he told us that I had some abnormal activity on the right side of my brain which is why I had the seizure but the MRI showed I have a cyst on the left side of my brain but that doesn't matter too much.
Anyway I am going to the riding stables in the morning to do some grooming, mucking out and main plaiting. Dr Madi said it is not a good idea to ride at the moment in case I have a funny thing again and I might fall off and really hurt myself so I am just going to do everything else with the horses. We went to buy Emily a new riding hat for her birthday on Monday today and I bought some horse treats for tomorrow. I am very excited about that.

What A Week

I am in hospital with a boy called Ben (he was the one who helped me when I had my nasal tube fitted) so I am having fun playing with him now and Asma who has been here for ages. Today we are having a mocktail party in the playroom and yesterday we made lots of invitations which we took all around the hospital. We made menus too of the different types of cocktails we will be having like pussy foot and the vamprie special.
I had a very busy day yesterday. First of all my consultant Dr Madi wanted me to have an MRI scan to see if he could see anything in my brain which would have made me have the funny seizure thing on Saturday. I was sooooooo scared about it but my Uncle Edward brought me some CDs to take with me sent by Hattie, Max and Tilly so that made me feel alot better. Mummy, Daddy and Helen (from Ward 27 playroom) came with me and once I had my headphones on and Princess Mirabelle playing I was fine. I had to lie absolutely still for 28 whole minutes and my hands were tingling by the end. When I got back to the ward Tabitha (my doctor) said Dr Madi then wanted me to have an EEG so in the afternoon Hannah (my best nurse) took me down to another part of the hospital over a bridge and I had to have 27 silver things with wires on the ends stuck to my head. I had to lie really still again for 20 minutes and blow a windmill and have lights flashing in to my eyes. I was scared about the EEG too but neither of them were bad at all. Dr Madi thinks I may be able to go home today but every time the nurses flush my line I go all dizzy and woozy in my head so we will just have to see.
Did I tell you that I rode a really nice pony last week called Katy? Sian and YoYo took me on a hack down the road and it was perfect. Mummy and Daddy said on the way home we can go to see Katy because I have missed my riding this week. I can't wait.
Anyway I have to go to staff training for the mocktails now so bye bye.

Mima has not had a very good weekend. She came in to hospital for a blood transfusion on Saturday and just after the 2nd bag went up she suffered a brain seizure and had a fit. She had a CT scan which showed no bleed in her brain but the doctors are concerned she may have encephalitis as she did not recover as they would have hoped. She is now on antibiotics and antivirals and we will wait and see what happens. She may have an MRI scan and another CT scan this week to see what is going on.
So it looks like she will be in hospital for a little while yet. She is however, bright and cheery and desperate to go horse riding again.
I will keep you posted.

Hello Everyone!

I am feeling much better now and am getting used to having my tube.

I was not very well at the beginning of last week. The chemo made me sick and the new feed I was on was too rich for my tummy so I felt very poorly. I went into hospital on Thursday morning and came home yesterday lunchtime. I felt really horrible after I woke up from the anaesthetic on Tuesday and I did not like having the tube in my nose so I tried to pull it out! My throat really hurt and i was so scared that if I talked or sneezed or coughed that the tube would come out so i decided not to talk until Saturday! I had a very nice man come to see me called a psychologist and he did a very clever magic trickwith cards to try to take my mind off my tube. He also said he would help me with my bad dreams, so I like him alot.
The nurses were very kind to me and Mummy. They taught Mummy how to feed me through my tube so now I can have a bag of feed running for 10 hours overnight whilst I am asleep - how cool is that??? when I wake up I am really full!! I can also have all of my medicines in my tube and I can do that myself without any help.
I have been to school today so I am very tired now but I will have a feed now and put my feet up to watch a bit of tv before Emily comes home.

Mima is not such a happy bunny today. She had her NG tube fitted yesterday whilst under general anaesthetic along with a couple of other procedures and woke up very upset and tried to pull the tube out. Her throat is very sore and her nose tickly so she is not speaking at the moment. She met Benjamin in hospital who had a NG tube too and he very kindly explained to her that he felt exactly the same as she did but after a few days he was much better.

She also had some bone marrow taken from the back of her pelvis yesterday which will be looked at to see if there are any leukaemia cells lurking. These results will tell us if she is still in remission.

We are back to the hospital this afternoon for a couple of doses of chemo and then again tomorrow for an intra muscular chemo injection. (the one Mima calls asparagus and mayonnaise)

Mima will be lying low for a few days I imagine but I am sure it won't take her long to get back to her old self. She may make it back to school on Friday - we'll see.

Thank you everyone for your wonderful messages. We all love reading them, but most particularly Mima enjoys knowing that people are thinking about her all the time.

AAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!

Well, my blood results from yesterday are good enough for me to go in to hospital today to start the next block of 9 weeks of treatment and to have my NG tube fitted. I am not really looking forward to it very much and I kept having bad dreams about it last night so when they put me to sleep today I will sleep very well!!!

I will write later to tell you all how it went but here is a picture of how I look this morning before and then I will do one later of how I look after.
